Out of the shadows, into the light

The new calendar from Hamburg’s street magazine Hinz&Kunzt reveals what is hidden behind the daily hustle and bustle of Hamburg’s streets: the people who live there and their stories.

In 12 motifs, photographer Kai-Uwe Gundlach captures the aesthetic noise of everyday life. At second glance, the scenes come to life digitally – the protagonists emerge from the shadows of the images and confront us with their very personal stories of the street and of Hinz&Kunzt.

Hinz&Kunzt takes homeless people out of ‘invisibility’ and gives them visibility, a task and new self-confidence by selling the street magazine and calendar. This brings them out of the shadows and into the light.

A calendar about Hamburg's hidden sides

For the calendar, photographer Kai-Uwe Gundlach captures the aesthetic side of everyday life. We see Hamburg – and yet we hardly recognise it. Schanze and Schulterblatt, Handelskammer and Reeperbahn, Elbphilharmonie and Rickmer Rickmers are not the usual postcard-chic eye-catchers, but the workplaces of Hinz & Künztler.

From the shadows into the light

In the calendar itself, the 12 motifs can be brought to life digitally using a mobile phone: In a surprising aperture, the Hinz & Kunzt artists emerge from the shadows of the pictures and confront us with their personal stories – about being ‘invisible’ and how Hinz & Kunzt helped them step out of the shadows and into the light.

The shadow people

12 sellers opened up and told their stories about the light and dark sides of life on the streets in an interview exclusively for the buyers of the calendar.

The campaign

An extensive social media and OOH campaign announces the calendar and confronts viewers directly with the stories of »the shadow people.«
